When it comes to adding colour to your kitchen cabinetry, most people shy away from committing to a shade that may not be as conventional as classic white and off white. White cabinets will continue to enjoy a long and popular run, but for those who want to spice up the kitchen with a more subtle approach, adding colour to the island is just the ticket.
We’ve seen this trend crop up in the past few years, and the mixing and matching prevails for a customized impact. So, what are the popular options this year?
Stained Wood: We often see couples choose a light painted cabinet, and a darker stained wood island. By introducing the wood island, a new element is brought into the plan without weighing down the kitchen. The space still looks light, and the richness of the island balances the room.
Black/Gray: While gray has peaked in popularity in recent years, it is still bouncing along as a crowd-pleasing pick for a secondary colour. Growing in popularity this year, are black accents. From a design stand point, adding an accent of black, somewhere in the room, whether it be a matte black vase on the counter, or an entire island, anchors the design, and creates a modern palette.
Navy: Navy and several shades of blue are set to take over the gray trend that we have been enjoying. With navy being a pseudo neutral, the impact is large, but the risk is minimal. A rich, dark hue, like Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy, will counter-balance a light kitchen and pair well with white or stained cabinets.
