When it comes to kitchen renovations, there are two major goals:
- Maximize counter space
- Bring in more light
Tom Hassleman and Tanya Sparkes, of Fredericton, NB, did just that!
Let’s take a look at their before photo to start. It probably looks familiar! Oak cabinets, cathedral arch doors, and a large bulkhead. The island homes the cook top, eliminating extra counter space. The window is large, but could still be maximized for a brighter potential.
Step one to increase counter space? Remove wall oven and cook top, replace with a conventional oven. Now the counter space has nearly doubled with the island top freed up! The bulkhead has been removed, bringing cabinets to the ceiling and adding lighted glass doors. This alone brightens up the kitchen significantly. The old window was removed and replaced with a single pane window, directly to the counter. This little change makes a large impact.
Here is the view looking from the kitchen towards the dining room, before renovations:
And now, after the renovation:
Let’s take a closer look at the window replacement. As mentioned earlier, bringing in light is extremely important in a kitchen renovation. Direct your attention to the older style windows, and the lost space between the counter and the window sill:
By replacing the two smaller windows with one larger, and extending to the counter, the amount of natural light is maximized:
The existing desk in the kitchen was removed to make way for a more functional work area. Large storage drawers, extra counter space, a pull out pantry, and a broom closet make perfect use of the space.
Custom sized cutlery trays keep drawers organized, and are included in every Avondale Kitchen:
A divided cookie sheet drawer is a great alternative to the standard vertical pull outs. Heavy duty slides can hold stacks of cutting boards, cooling racks and flat pans, keeping your items organized and within easy reach.
Thank you Tom and Tanya for choosing Avondale for your kitchen makeover!
